You may ask, so what does this personal radio thing sound like? Or you may ask, what's up with your playlist -- I never heard any of those songs. Clearly, it's in the grooves ... that is, you must listen to know (or, you could read the Mix Manifesto to gain further insight). At one time, the MadameFLY show on Live365 was your best bet to hear any of the mixes you have discovered here that intrigue you (unless you knew me personally and got a CD for your birthday.) Beginning in May 2001, a few of the best sets began to appear from time to time on other sites ... FLYpaper is a good source for broadcast details and links.
Beginning in November 2001, a new option opened up on the internet broadcasting band: MixMeister Radio. Dedicated to the proposition that MixMeister lets you do more with your music, this radio station features the work of DJs using the MixMeister software to create their mixes. Every variety of music is welcome and new mixes will be added on a regular basis. MadameFLY is proud to be associated with this skilled crew, and I invite you to check us out -- click here to access MixMeister Radio. MixMeister Radio offers both Hi-Fi and Lo-Fi streams, so you should be able to listener whether you are on a broadband connection or not. In addition, mmRadio has a nifty "What's Playing Now" feature which lets you know the track title and artist of the currently-playing music ... brilliant!
You can also sample my sets via my station on
Live365 by clicking this link: mybroadcast
-- The stream is hosted by
one of several websites devoted to
making broadcasters of us all, even those of us who do not have the time,
technical skills or hardware to serve our own broadcast stream to the
world.
A note for those new to the game: Changing economic demands have led to the introduction of some fairly obnoxious commercial announcements on Live365 streams (unless listeners opt to pay for Preferred Membership which provides commercial-free streams.) These commercial announcements interrupt the mixes. If that turns you off, try MixMeister Radio which is commercial-free. But if you want to give it a try, and see what's playing on L365 right now, check out the Live365 Stream page.

June 2007 CRB Royalty Update -- and Day of Silence info: [Continued from the home page]: Tuesday, June 26th -- Day of Silence. Of course, I'm talking about the attempt that will be made by webcasters who are under the RIAA royalty gun to help all internet radio listeners comprehend just what they will be missing if the music industry coalition of major labels, RIAA and SoundExchange succeed in imposing punitive royalty rates on independent webcasters ... rates that would in most cases meet or exceed the total of any monies these webcasters receive for their radio broadcasting efforts. As you may be aware, many webcasters are simply people who love music and love the sensation of introducing people -- strangers! -- to all their favorite tunage and, in the process, creating new music lovers who will be new music buyers as well. You could call us hobbyists ... though that can sound a bit dismissive ... but what you generally can't call us is businesses. Certainly not in the sense of selling products (or selling advertising) and making a living (or, indeed, any income at all) from our efforts. Let's take me, the example I know best. I've had a station on Live365 almost since the first day it appeared on the internet ... Unlike a lot of other folks who became L365 broadcasters in the early years, it was never my intention to use my station as a run-up to the big time (e.g., making the leap to commercial play over the internet or eventually leaving to join a terrestrial station.) All I knew was that hip people had introduced me to music that I simply loved and I wanted to do the same service for others ... and Live365 let me do that, legally, while taking on all the technical duties for me. As Live365 went from being a free service for webcasters to requiring an annual payment (they needed a business model that would support the royalties put into effect at that time) they also instituted a modest rewards program for broadcasters. Their most generous payment is awarded as a One-Time Bounty when a new VIP Member listener subscribes in order to gain access to -- or show support for -- the broadcaster's station; that reward is one dollar and fifty cents. There is also a subscription share program that shares-out money from the subscription income among eligible broadcasters (you can read details on calculation of these bounties here: http://www.live365.com/broadcast/rewards/). So, you figure I'm livin' large, right? Well, in May 2007, I earned eight cents. In June, because some sweetheart out there got a VIP subscription that I got credit for, I've earned $1.56. I figure that, over the five or so years that the program has been in effect, I have probably earned $50 max. Well, I see you thinking, with all that dough rollin' in, how could I possibly object to paying $500 a year minimum in royalties, up from around $280/year average since 2001? After all, lots of people pay far greater sums for their hobbies ... boating, fishing, golfing, gambling, cars, horses, fine wines, stamps ... you name it, they all cost plenty. So what's my problem? Well, first, that I don't make enough to have such an expensive hobby ... I don't make enough either from the hobby or from my RL job (in that world we live in where middle-class wages have been stagnant for 20 years, neither do you, probably.) Secondly, I don't play Top 40, mainstream artists, and independent research has verified time and again that the people collecting the royalty monies from internet radio air play are not distributing those royalties to all recording artists based on their actual air play ... many independent artists are written off as "not able to be located" and their money is sequestered and redistributed to those artists who can be found (50/50 to label and artist ... oh, and that is AFTER the RIAA / SoundExchange "administrative costs" have been taken off the top. If you know anything at all about contracts that specify meeting operating expenses before distributing income, then you know that far more money goes to the RIAA / SX axis than they have earned.) So, the system is broken and I very much dislike having a contribution to it extracted from me by force.... I dislike it much more than I would if I had to pay exactly the same amount of money, but I got to hand out the checks myself to the specific artists whose music I had played. But that's just the story of one little person (moi!) ... everyone's story is different, and I urge you to visit Live365 or other webcast sites that have open forums, and get acquainted with these stories yourself. Join me and Tepmix on the BeatMixing / MixMeister Community forums, where we have an on-going conversation about this topic, with interesting facts for you to consider. And, finally, please bear
with us through the Day of Silence -- June 26th -- because we're really
doing it for you -- so you will have the chance to recognize that your
freedom to choose the music you listen to is being taken away, station by
station.... |
June 2004 update: A word about Preferred Member status on Live365 ... for about $4.00/month, you can hear not only the BeatConscious stream, but something like 10,000 other streams ad-free on L365. Ah, but ... full disclosure here: if you become a Preferred Member using the link below, not only will you listen ad-free, but I'll get a kick-back from L365 that helps defray my cost to broadcast. This has been the case for a while now, but I hadn't actually paid much attention to it ... I tend to broadcast from L365 rather than listen to it, and it didn't use to cost all that much to have them host the show ... but that is changing (so what else is new?) Going forward, it might actually be a good thing if I raked in a few Preferred Membership credits, rather than skimping on food, clothes and new CD releases.... Well, OK, I'm exaggerating. Nonetheless, here's that link for you to consider:
OK, so whether you go Preferred or not, you may have a question regarding the stream ... you may wonder:
What Am I Listening To? Unlike mmRadio, my L365 station doesn't have the capability at present to display the individual track titles of a mixed set (most broadcasters at L365 are playing the tracks unmixed). If you want some idea of what you are listening to, please bookmark my MixedSets Playlist page. Mixed sets are listed in the order they were created ... since Live365 displays the name of the mix, I would suggest going to the playlist page and using the FIND function (CTRL+F plus the word you are looking for) to search the page for the name of the mix currently playing.
If you visit the Live365 website instead of using the link above, you can also find my broadcast by entering "madamefly" in the search box, and clicking the search button .... my stream, MadameFLY's Nightlife, should be the result; click on the listen icon to open the playlist and your audio player (you must have some audio player, such as the one provided by Live365, or WinAmp, Real Audio or MusicMatch Jukebox installed to hear any streams on Live365.com. If you become a Preferred Member, you get a special player to use.)
Keep in mind
that you will hear whatever is in the stream at that moment; you can't make a
"request" for a specific set (this is also true for MixMeister Radio.) At present, I have
over 15 hours
of music available for your listening pleasure on Live365, and a
steadily-increasing presence on MixMeister Radio -- you can't miss!

And then there's the feedback from the Live365 listeners.... First of all, I'd like to thank you for your great mixes. I'm a fan of MadameFLY's on Live365.com and was looking around your site to see if there are any ways to get your mixes on CD. Please let me know if you burn the mixes or if there is another way to get my hands on them. Thanks again.
